Job Summary
This position reports to the SCI Director and is responsible for all aspects of strategic communications and marketing for the institute including the following: communications plan development and implementation, social media management, graphic design for print and web, web management, SEO, email marketing, science and technical editing and writing, written and visual content development.
Qualifications
1. Requires a Master’s degree in journalism, or a related field.
2. Experience working in higher education and/or an academic fundraising organization.
3. Strong communications planning, and written and visual content development skills.
4. Strong social media and web management skills.
5. Strong editing and writing skills.
Responsibilities
1. Develops and implements a strategic communications plan.
2. Develops compelling written and visual content.
3. Develops effective and cooperative relationships with students, staff and faculty.
4. Promotes new and existing research programs to internal and external stakeholders.
5. Writes engaging science articles promoting discovery, new awards and accomplishments.
6. Editor and contributor for Fresh Tracks Magazine.
7. Leads social media strategy and management.
8. Familiar with The Chicago Manual of Style and The Associated Press Stylebook
9. Ensures the competency of interns, freelance contractors, staff and agencies.
10. Competent in using Adobe Creative Cloud: InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat.
11. Email marketing.
12. Web management, SEO, HTML, CSS.
13. Basic photography and audio and video production.
14. Strong understanding of integrated marketing, multimedia campaign development.
15. Internal and external event planning.
16. Internal communication.
17. Speech and ghost writing for the Director.
18. Strong project and agency management skills.
19. Understands graphic design.
20. Detail and deadline oriented.
21. Work closely with IT front-end and back-end developers.

Minimum Qualifications
Requires a Bachelor’s degree in a related area of assignment or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience). Four to six years of progressively more responsible management experience. Background knowledge of assigned department’s area of specialization in order to analyze, plan and draw conclusions for recommendations to superiors. Demonstrated leadership skills in planning and directing employees and processes in order to effectively monitor and develop subordinates and to ensure the smooth operation of department.

Master’s degree in a related area may be preferred.
