Why Not?

The object of our desires...the Y-Not Couloir. Descending the cliff in the middle
requires a 50' rappel. We climbed the couloir (see below) on the left side of the ridge
(out of sight here) to avoid ascending the cliff.  We would have entered from the ridge on the top left.

We climbed the couloir above (right spur of the "Y-Couloir") for the approach.
The "Y-Not" is over the ridge to the right.

We started hiking at 7 am, but were turned around by 10 am because the sun hit the
rocks above us and started dropping snow and ice on us.

So...we got 1st tracks of the season in the right-spur of the Y-Couloir.
Nearly 3,000' of 40-45 degrees and the first 300' was untracked powder!! :)

Me on top in our snow pit/boot changing area. Note that my feet are level with the snow on the
downhill side and my shoulder is level with it on the uphill side. Steep :)

Greg getting first tracks from our turn-around point.

Aaron fighting a 30 lb. pack and complete exhaustion..

But oh is it beautiful!!!

"Focus on the next turn...come on, you can do it without looking like an idiot (like the last 100 turns)...the pack isn't THAT heavy"

"Screw the pack!!  I'm too tired to ski with this thing...I'll just huck it down the couloir instead."

Greg crossing the stream on the way back to the car. Unfortunately, he dropped a foot
in the stream on his way across in the morning and skied with a really wet foot all day.

It was 60 degrees when we got back to the car at noon.  5 hours of sufferfest was over,
but oh did it feel gooooooooooooodddd.

We got up to Alta by 12:30 pm and skied a half day carving in the spring mush.

I'll go back soon with Fred to try the Y-Not again....
