Designed especially for neurobiologists, FluoRender is an interactive tool for multi-channel fluorescence microscopy data visualization and analysis.
Deep brain stimulation
BrainStimulator is a set of networks that are used in SCIRun to perform simulations of brain stimulation such as transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and magnetic transcranial stimulation (TMS).
Developing software tools for science has always been a central vision of the SCI Institute.

Hackdance newsSCI Graduate student Michael Liu was a key member on the team that took the Social Impact award at "Hackdance", the first ever celebrity-driven hackathon at the Sundance Film Festival. The team, working with celebrity member Sarah Austin (StartUps: Silicon Valley on Bravo), developed a prototype browser extension that monitors cyber bullying. Once installed, the extension uses a parts of speech tagger to look for harrassing comments and sentences in any conversations or content. If language is detected in their child's feed that is related to cyberbulling they are sent an alert message via email immediately. The team, which included fellow members Faris Chebib, Joe Reis, Sam Hart and Eric Smith, was awarded a $5,000 investment from the University of Utah’s Sorensen Global Impact Investment Center plus $10,000 worth of business incubation and a trip to meet Jim Sorensen. Congratulations Michael!

HBM Hackathon2013 newsCongratulations to Kris Zygmunt, Wei Liu, and Sean McKenna for winning the second challenge of the 2013 HBM Hackathon sponsored by Allen Institute for Brain Science and Amazon Web Services. The HBM Hackathon consisted of two challenges announced prior to the meeting and a third mystery challenge announced during the meeting. These challenges were:

1. Best imaging and gene expression relationship discovered via integration of imaging data with the Allen Human Brain Atlas.

2. Best neural systems model or visualization based on large-scale integration of resting state fMRI data with other HBM Hackathon accessible datasets.

3. MNI Mash-up: Most innovative map or aggregation of information in the MNI 152 standard.

Weiss ASME-award newsCongratulations to Dr. Jeff Weiss who has been selected to receive the 2013 Van Mow Medal from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

This highly competitive award is ASME's highest honor for a mid-career bioengineer. Jeff was chosen "... for seminal contributions to research in bimoechanics related to fundamental structure-function relationships in musculoskeletal soft tissues, subject-specific modeling of joint mechanics, image-based biomechanics, the mechanics of angiogenesis, and the development and distribution of the FEBio software suite."
Miriah TEDFellowCongratulations to Miriah Meyer who has been selected as a 2013 TED Fellow. This honor was granted to just 20 applicants from over 1200 applications.

TED2013's tagline is: "The Young. The Wise. The Undiscovered." And this year's class of TED Fellows will be representing all three. The TED Fellows program brings together young innovators from around the globe, all with insightful, bold ideas that have the potential to influence our world. In addition to attending TED2013, the Fellows will go to a preconference boot camp full of advice for spreading their ideas far and wide, and get mentoring from the larger TED community.

Tolga NSFAward2012Congratulations to SCI Faculty member and USTAR Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering Tolga Tasdizen who was recently awarded an NSF CAREER award for his proposal "Deep sparse dictionary context models and their application to image parsing and neuron tracking for connectomics".

epicanvas2012Congratulations to Yarden Livnat and Nathan Galli, et. al. whose paper received the 1st place Award for Outstanding Research Article in Biosurveillance in the Scientific Achievement Category by the International Society for Disease Surveillance (ISDS). This paper describes the development of a new software prototype designed to explore infectious disese data in an interactive visual way that will allow public health professionals to find spacial and temporal correlations, a kind of "disease weather map."

chris-babbageCongratulations to Chris Johnson on receiving the IEEE IPDPS 2012 Charles Babbage Award in recognition of his innovations in the area of scientific visualization and their application to computational biomedicine, engineering, and scientific discovery.
