Research
I am a research computer scientist at the Scientific Computing and Imaging (SCI) Institute at the University of
Utah. I am also Co-PI of the CDC Center of Excellence for Public Health Informatics and lead the visual
analytics research and development effort. I have lead research and development teams and efforts as the
leader and as senior investigation for the past 30 years. In recent years I have focus on novel visual displays
and interactions an in particular on visual correlation of heterogeneous data to facilitate situational awareness.
An important aspect of my work involves understanding the end-users and developing truly user-centric
software. I split my time between writing software, mentoring students and leading research efforts. My work
spans a wide range of application domains such as Epidemiology (early detection and investigation of
infectious disease outbreaks), Biomedicine (genes and protein correlation), and network security (network
intrusion detection).
