Abstract:

Various stages of data processing, including the modeling of scattered volumetric data and the algorithms used to render isosurfaces, can introduce uncertainty or error in the final visualization. Although researchers are aware of the errors that arise during data processing, there still remains no visual framework for evaluating uncertainty in isosurfaces. This paper focuses on the comparison of isosurfaces through UISURF, a visualization system for displaying uncertainty in isosurfaces. UISURF provides visual and statistical information to aid in the evaluation and comparison of isosurfaces and the algorithms used to generate them. Uncertainty is visualized through a series of techniques: overlay, pseudo-coloring, transparency, glyphs, animation, and sonification. Results are presented for comparing isosurfaces generated from different algorithms and those obtained by using different volumetric interpolation models.

Summary:

UISURF is a system that allows the interactive exploration of uncertainty information pertaining to isosurfaces. Specifically, the differences in the volumetric interpolation models used to build the dataset and the differences in algorithms used to create the isosurfaces are displayed. The comparisons of these techniques are visualized using pseudo-coloring, transparency, glyphs, animation, statistical displays and sonification.
