About me

My name is António R. C. Paiva. I was born in Ovar, Portugal in 1980. I received my B.S. degree in electronics and telecommunications engineering from the University of Aveiro, Portugal in 2003, and the M.S. and Ph.D. degree in electrical and computer engineering from the University of Florida, USA in 2005 and 2008, respectively. From 2008 to 2010, I worked at the SCI Institute at the University of Utah as a post-doctoral fellow under Dr. Tolga Tasdizen. I'm currently a researcher at ExxonMobil URC.

During my undergraduate studies I received four merit scholarships, a Dr. Vale Guimarães award for best district student at the University of Aveiro, and a Eng. Ferreira Pinto Basto award from Alcatel Portugal for top graduating student in my major (class of 2003).

After completing my undergraduate degree and before enrolling at the University of Florida, I was a research assistant of Dr. Armando Pinho for almost a year. I did research in image compression, first through vector quantization techniques and afterwards in microarray images.

During my graduate studies, my research focused on the development of a reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces framework for analysis and processing of point processes, with applications on neural spike train analysis. Simply put, I tried to develop a principled and extensible approach to do signal processing with realizations of point processes by incorporating ideas from kernel methods, information-theoretic learning and machine learning in general.

My research interests are, broadly, signal processing and machine learning. These include kernel methods, information theoretic learning, image processing, and adaptive and brain-inspired computation.
