Foundations of Topological Analysis

Topological techniques are becoming increasingly popular in large scale data analysis. They provide the high level of abstraction necessary to deal with extremely large data. Simultaneously, their close connection to well known mathematical theories can be exploited to guarantee correctness, completeness, and strict error bounds. The interplay between fundamental theory, robust algorithms, and their impact on applications gives rise to a new subfield concerned with topology-based data analysis. This workshop will explore this rapidly growing field with a particular focus on the
open challenges and recent approaches to address them.

Program Chairs: Peer-Timo Bremer (LLNL), Valerio Pascucci (University of Utah), and Hans Hagen (University of Kaiserslautern)

  • Scalar / Vector / Tensor field topology
  • Feature detection and extraction
  • Discrete approaches
  • Simplification, metrics, and error bounds
  • Multi-scale representations
  • Multivariate analysis and correlations
  • Higher-order topological methods
  • Topology of derived fields and their scientific applications
  • Time-dependent methods
** UPDATE **
Keynote Lecture: Due to an unforeseen conflict Prof. Edelsbrunner will unfortunately not be able to give the keynote. Check back soon for an updated schedule.

Invited Speakers: Christoph Garth (UC Davis), Attila Gyulassy (University of
Utah), Gerik Scheuerman (Leipzig University)

Program:
The workshop will consist of short talks (10-15 minutes) and discussion periods organized into sessions alongside an invited presentation. Depending on the quality of submissions, parts of the program will give special considerations to novel ideas and research lead by junior member of the community, post-doc level and below. Program Chairs: Peer-Timo Bremer (LLNL), Valerio Pascucci (University of Utah), and Hans Hagen (University of Kaiserslautern)

** UPDATED DEADLINE **
Based on numerous requests the deadline for abstract submission has been extended by one week to Sep. 13th.
Submission:
One to two page abstracts outlining the contributions and indicating the presenter(s) should be submitted to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . Deadline for submission is Monday September 13th 2010. Notifications of acceptance will be send September 27th 2010.Selected papers will be invited to submit extended versions to a corresponding call for submissions to a special issue on Topological Analysis of the Journal on Computer Aided Geometric Design (CAGD).
