Bike Rides

See Rides in Utah for participants in Vis2010 on mapmyride.com.

Flat rides:

  • Airport to Salt Lake Marina: Completely flat, 32 miles out and back. Not far from downtown. This may be your best option for a first ride to get adjusted to the altitude. It passes about 30meters from the start of the runway and the planes land just over your hand. Kind of cool. Not very scenery though if we'll have snow on the mountain it could be impressive view. You can also see Antelope Island.
  • Antelope Island: Flat.
  • Wasatch Blvd: Relatively flat. Starts in a a residential area. Wasatch Blvd itself is at the foot of the hills and have a nice view of the whole valley. The last portion is busy in case you want to cut that part out. Starts close to the University.

Rolling Hills:

  • Heber to Kamas: Flat except for one hill. 53 miles out and back. Scenery.
  • Coalville to Chalk Creek: Steady moderate climb. 48 miles out and back. I haven't done it but heard it's nice.
  • Snow Basin: 33 miles loop. Scenery. The valley (Eden) is flat. There is a section that has high traffic (the bend next to Ogden Canyon). The views from Snow Basin are impressive. The climb to Snow Basin can be skipped. Another option is for some people to return to the car and pick us the others if you want to descend to Morgan instead of back to the valley.
  • Park City - Kamas - Brown Canyon: 36 miles loop. Scenery. Main road to Kamas but with very wide sides. Kamas to Peoa is busy and narrow. Peoa to Park City is wide with very little traffic. The area is colder than Salt Lake City.

Climbs:

  • Emigration Canyon (Dell Reservoir): moderate climb to the top of Emigration Canyon. You can descend a little to Dell Reservoir. 20 miles out and back. Starts close to the University
  • Big Mountain: Continues past Dell Reservoir. 34 miles out and back. Scenery
  • Kamas to Wolf Creek Pass: Steady climb. 45 miles out and back. The last part is steep. Likely be too cold

Everest or long rides:

  • Alta (Little Cottonwood Canyon): 24 Miles out and back. Scenery but likely too cold
  • Brighton (Big Cottonwood Canyon): Scenery but likely too cold.
  • Alpine Loop: 113 Miles loop. Scenery but likely too cold.
  • Fall Color Century: 100 miles lots of ups and down. Continues pass Big Mountain and returns via Park City. I have a few pictures on my picasa web site from my last ride about a week and a half ago.
  • Mirror Lake loop: 117 miles loop. Impressive scenery. Likely too cold. I'm going to ride portion of it (Kamas to Mirror Lake out and back, 60 miles this weekend. I'll post some pictures).
  • Moab Century: One tough climb. Check the website http://skinnytireevents.com/content/section/12/30/
  • Tour de St. George: mostly rolling hills. The warmest place in Utah. Check the website http://spingeeks.com/tourdestgeorge.html
