THE COLLABORATIVE PIPELINE
Initial discussion: The Center will learn about the goals and aims of the collaborator and try to envision how the Center might play a role in achieving those aims.
Evaluation of needs/match: Once the merit and feasibility have been established, the technical manager will often visit the collaborator’s facility, determining the potential impact that the Center’s technology might have on the project and associated field.
Preparation of proposal: For each collaboration, prepare a proposal that outlines the science and the possible scientific and technical roles the Center could play in advancing that science. This will become the roadmap for the collaboration.
Evaluation of the proposal: The basis for a decision will include the centrality of the colaboration to the Center’s mission, the potential for growth into new areas of science and the degree of leverage that the collaboration brings to the Center.
Implementation phase: The Center dedicates time from the technical manager, a scientific staff member, and a developer; the collaborator will identify a member who coordinates the project on their side. The project then comes under the management of the Center.
Evaluation, monitoring, and review: We will conduct regular discussions of progress within the Center, as well as regular dialogues with the collaborator regarding the achievement of milestones and steps toward publication and application for external funding.
External funding: The Center will participate in the application for such funding, providing the collaborator with material for preliminary results and research design and methods.
